Question Title IGES Export Options

File > Export > Set IGES Options

IGES Export Options Form

Use this form to set the IGES export options.

  1. Complete the form as described below.
  2. Pick OK to accept the current selections as the new defaults or Reset to return all selections to their previous defaults.

Forms and Dialogues Geometry form

  • Primitive
Map to IGES primitive entities such as lines (110), circular arcs (100), surface of revolutions (120), and ruled surfaces (118), etc., when appropriate. Entities that cannot be mapped to primitives will be mapped to splines.

  • Spline
Map to IGES parametric spline curves and surfaces. These include rational B-spline curves and surfaces - NURBS ( 112 & 114) and parametric spline curves and surfaces - Polynomials ( 126 & 128).

Forms and Dialogues Spline type

Refers to the geometry forms mapped to splines.

  • Nurb
Map to IGES rational B-spline curves and surfaces (126 & 128).

  • Polynomial
Map to IGES parametric spline curves and surfaces (112 & 114).

Forms and Dialogues Solids

The results of these selections will be governed by the Geometry Form and Spline Type selections.

  • B-rep
Map to IGES manifold solid B-rep objects (186) that contain vertices (502), edges (504), loops (508), faces (510), and shells (514).

  • Free Surface
Map surfaces independent of other surfaces without relationship information.

Forms and Dialogues Additional Options

  • Group
Pick the indicator to maintain group associations. Group associations include sketches, assembly components, and drawing sheet geometry groups. Turn this option off for exporting to systems that have a known record of improperly importing IGES groups (308) and group instances (408).

  • Extract sub-curves
Pick the indicator to only extract sub-curves. Sub-curves include the arc portions of a circle or the trimmed portion of a curve. Turn this option on for exporting to systems that have a known record of improperly importing curve boundaries. Ideally, this option is left off so that the curve boundary (entire curve) and the trimmed portion are both exported.

  • Split closed surface
Pick the indicator to break closed surfaces into smaller non-closed surfaces to aid third party translators that have a difficult time with closed surfaces. This option is not supported for B-Rep solid export. Thus the ability to select ’Split closed surfaces’ or ’B-rep’ is disabled if the other is selected.

  • Extend surfaces
Due to convex hull checking, other systems sometimes register VX trim loops as falling off the surface in situations where the trim loop rides the surface edge.  Use this option to extend the surface during the export.

  • JAMA format
Japanese Automotive Manufacturers Association - IGES Subset (JAMA-IS) :: This option will select the export options required to restrict the export to a particular subset of IGES entities compliant with the JAMA standard.

  • Units
Select the IGES export units from the list. All geometry will be scaled by the units selected. Select from: Microns, Millimeters, Centimeters, Meters, Kilometers, Microinches, Mils, Inches, Feet, and Miles.

Forms and Dialogues Relative Coordinate System

At the Part Level, use this option to export relative to the World or the Local coordinate system. Use the Local Coordinate Frame command to create a local coordinate system of your choice.

Forms and Dialogues Default Directory

This sets the default directory for locating files to import of the specified type. Pick the folder icon to select a path from the Directory Browser. The path will be added to the Default Directory Field. The Default directory field only applies to the active session while VX is running unless it is permanently saved using the Save Settings button on the Import Form.

More about the Default Directory

All import/export translators have their own default-directory on their options form.  If the default-directory is set, then the Directory Browser will always come up in that directory.  If the default-directory is not set, then the file browser will come up in the "last visited" directory.

The last visited directory is not unique.  There is one last visited for all import translators and one for all export translators.  By default, the value in the Default Directory field is set to ’.’ which means, use the "last visited" directory.  The file icon allows you to browse for a directory which will then be the new default.  You can set the Default Directory back to "." by selecting Reset on the form.

Forms and Dialogues Other Options

  • OK - Accept the current selections and make them the defaults for the active session (see also Default directory above).

  • Reset - Return all selections to the previous defaults.

Notes

  1. B-rep and Free Surface are grouping mechanisms designed to preserve the relationship between surfaces (B-rep) or ignore it (Free Surface). B-rep provides a map by which the free surfaces can be easily sewn back together to form a solid (closed region).
