GD&T Symbols

Insert > Dimensions > GD&T (Drawing Sheet Level)

Use the following commands to create GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols. These symbols are used at the Drawing Sheet Level to create a dimensioning scheme that adheres to the ANSI Y14.5 standard. GD&T symbols, frames, datums and targets can be created. In each case, the Dimension Editor is used to create the actual symbols.
 
 
 

GD&T Feature Control Symbol

GD&T Feature Control SymbolThis command creates a GD&T feature control symbol (FCS). Enter the FCS text or pick the folder icon to use the Dimension Editor (or RMB Editor). Select a location for the symbol.
 

Optional Inputs  Required Inputs

  • FCS text
    The FCS text is created using the Dimension Editor.  It will be shown here.  You can change it here if you wish.

  • Location
    Select the location for the FCS.  A single pick will locate the box in space.  If you want a leader, the first pick is where the arrow points subsequent points define the rest of the leader.

  • Leader Points
    If you want the symbol attached to one or more leader arrows, select the points to locate the arrows. 
     

Optional Inputs  General Attributes

  • Leader arrow size
    Specify the leader arrow size or select an arrow type from the menu provided

    • Color
      Select the color for the leader from the color selector

         

Optional Inputs  Misc Attributes

  • Extender type
    Use this option to determine if a horizontal extender line should be applied and if so, a default length is supplied.  It can be modified if desired.

         

         

    • All Around Symbol
      Select the All Around Symbol mark to toggle it on or off.

             

Optional Inputs   Text Attributes

  • Font Size
    Fields are provided for the numeric values for each of the following text settings. 

           

 

    • Height - Measured in default drawing sheet units
    • Width - Scale factor of the height.
    • Horizontal spacing between characters - Scale factor of height.
    • Vertical spacing between rows - Scale factor of height.

 

  • Color

Select a color for the leader from the color selector.

    • Font

This is the primary font and refers to the default single byte text font attribute. 

The font selector will appear in the preview window.  Double click to select the font.

  • Font Size
    Fields are provided for the numeric values for each of the following text settings.

Notes  Notes

  1. Use the Dimension Attributes Form - Misc tab - to turn the All Around-Profile symbol on or off.  The default is ON. To change this behavior I suggest editing your templates and turn it OFF. 

  2. Pick the Toggle Grid (Ctrl+G) icon from the Tool Bar to turn the drawing grid on. This will aid in creating leader points.

 

 

GD&T Datum Feature Symbol

GD&T Datum Feature Symbol GD&T Datum Feature SymbolThis command creates a GD&T datum feature symbol and extends it from a selected point. You can enter the datum text string directly or right-click and select Editor to use the Dimension Editor. Then specify the text point to locate the symbol. Optionally, you can choose to display the datum feature triangle.
 

Optional Inputs  Required Inputs

  • Datum triangle

  Yes (default) or No.

  • Datum text

Enter the datum text here or RMB select Editor to use the Dimension Editor.

  • Point
    Select the base point on the view to start the DFS.  Refer to the example illustration above.

  • Text point
    Select the point to locate the DFS text.

 

 

 

GD&T Datum Target Point Symbol

GD&T Datum Target Area Symbol (at Location) GD&T Datum Target Area Symbol (at Location)This command creates a GD&T datum target point symbol at a specified location. Specify the GD&T datum target text using the Dimension Editor and then specify the target and text points.
 

Optional Inputs  Required Inputs

  • Datum text
    The DTPS text you created using the Dimension Editor.  It will be shown here.  You can change it here if you wish.

  • Target point
    Select the target point on the view to start the DTPS leader line.

  • Text point
    Select the point to locate the DTPS text.

 

 

GD&T Datum Target Area Symbol

GD&T Datum Target Area Symbol (at Circle) GD&T Datum Target Area Symbol (at Circle)This command creates a GD&T datum target area symbol and attaches it to a circle. Specify the GD&T datum target text using the Dimension Editor and then select the circle and text point.
 

Optional Inputs  Required Inputs

  • Datum text
    The DTAS text you created using the Dimension Editor.  It will be shown here.  You can change it here if you wish.

  • Target entity
    Select the target point on any 2D circle entity to start the DTAS leader line.

  • Text point
    Select the point to locate the DTAS text.
