Using the Mouse
VX utilizes the common 3-button mouse for user interaction. New users should read and learn each topic listed below to master VX interaction techniques.
Mouse Button Assignments
Single click - picks entities and adds them to an active list. Double click - selects an entity and automatically invokes a default command to process the entity.
Single-click - Accepts the active list (from the single-left-click) and displays a menu of options for processing the list.
Single-click (with an entity highlighted) - picks the entity and displays a menu of options for processing it. Single-click (with no entity highlighted) - displays a default pop-up menu for inserting/creating objects and various other options.
Using the Mouse for Selecting
Position the cursor over an entity or listed item and left-click to select it. Middle-click to accept default values and as an alternative to the Return Key in many situations.
Using the Mouse for Object Editing
The Object Editor provides a quick and easy way to perform many frequently used editing tasks. Simply move the cursor over an object to highlight it such as a curve, text, or feature and right-click the mouse to display an Object Editor Popup Menu that contains editing commands tailored to that specific object type. You can use the
Pick Filter to set the object type to highlight.

You can also double-left-click on an object such as a sketch to activate it for editing or a curve to modify it. The 3-button mouse assignments for object editing in VX are provided below.
To get help for individual commands located on Object Editor Popup Menus, use the Help Interactive Mode. This will display help topics as commands are selected from the menus.
Using the Mouse for Accepting Default Values
The middle mouse button (i.e., middle-click) is used in multiple ways. In a new command (middle-click)
can sometimes be used to branch the prompt sequence. An example is the Extrude Shape command. The first prompt is "Select profile or (middle-click)
for new sketch." An existing sketch can be selected. The (middle-click)
can be used to create a new sketch within the
Extrude Shape command.
Also, in a new command (middle-click)
can be used to accept a default value. The default value will be a system default the first time a command is used. A command’s defaults become the values from the last time the command was used. (Middle-click)
can also be used to keep the original value of a prompt while editing a feature.
When VX automatically shows a value in the
text input field, it is showing you the current input value that has already been logged with the system. In some cases, like the
Edge Fillet command, this value is automatically logged as a default. (Middle-click)
will accept this value. To change the value, activate the
text input field and type in the new value and press the (Enter)
key. This causes the new text input to be accepted.
Using the Mouse (Middle-click) & (Enter)
(Middle-click) and (Enter) can behave the same way. Pressing the (Enter) key when the
text input field is inactive or is active but has no input) behaves the same as (middle-click). (Middle-click) and (Enter) can behave differently.
Using (middle-click)
when typing in the text input field results in the use of default values. Pressing (Enter)
results in the use of the typed in values.
You can enable the Auto repeat commands option on the General Tab of the
VX Configuration Form
. Doing so will repeat the last command automatically when the (Enter)
key is pressed or a (middle-click)
is performed.
In this way VX provides a way of accepting the last (or default) input after new text has been put in the text input field. Without this, the default input would be lost as soon as you started typing.
Once you type new text in the text input field (or the VX dynamic echo puts a new value there temporarily), you have to apply a keyboard (Enter)
event to cause it to replace the default input. Up until that point, you can (middle-click)
to ignore the temporary text input and use the default input.
Using the Mouse for Input Options
 You can
the mouse during many commands that prompt you for input. Doing so will display a menu of the input options for that command prompt. The options that appear are command sensitive and will vary depending on the situation. Shown here are the input options for entering a direction in VX.
Using the Mouse for Zooming
VX supports the middle mouse wheel for quick zooming. Roll the wheel forward to zoom in and back to zoom out. This can be done any time there is geometry in the
graphic window (e.g., at the
Part, Sketch,
Drawing Sheet and
CAM
levels). The zoom will occur about the current cursor location by default. This can be changed to the center of the display using the Display tab of the VX Configuration Form.
You can still use the mouse in conjunction with Dynamic View to pan, zoom and rotate. Using the middle mouse wheel to zoom provides additional flexibility when working with large or complex parts, drawings or CAM plans.
Using the Mouse as an Auto Pick Filter
(SHIFT) +
VX supports the middle mouse wheel as a pick filter while the (SHIFT)
key is pressed (i.e., Auto Pick Filter). When the mouse is not on an entity, nothing happens. When the mouse cursor is highlighting an entity for selection, you can use the wheel to scroll through the various entities that may be pickable at the current mouse location. For example, if you put the mouse on an edge, rolling the wheel with the shift key depressed will jump from edge, to face, to shell, to feature, and back to edge
You can still use the mouse in conjunction with Dynamic View to pan, zoom and rotate. Using the middle mouse wheel (without (SHIFT) to zoom provides additional flexibility when working with large or complex parts, drawings or CAM plans.
Notes
- During Object Editing at the Drawing Sheet Level, entities will highlight automatically when the cursor passes over them. You can disable the automatic highlighting feature by selecting Zero from the 2D Pick Filter Form.
