Question Title Inquire Mass Properties

Inquire > Mass Properties

Use this command to calculate and display mass properties information (e.g., volume, area, mass, etc.) for a selected shape (open or closed), component, or the entire assembly. Blanked and/or suppressed components in an assembly will be ignored during these calculations.  (Surface) Area is the only value that can reasonably be relied on for an Open Shape.  A warning message is promenently displayed letting you know that you have selected an Open Shape.

You can use the Options Form to log variables to the active part’s history whose values equal each mass properties parameter. The variable can then be used in any expression, equation or VX macro.

To save the data to a file, select Overwrite or Append, enter the path and file name, and press or pick the folder icon to select a file from the File Browser.

Required InputsRequired Inputs

  • Part
Select the shape or component or middle-click to select the active part or assembly. The Inquire Mass Properties Form appears displaying the results.

Optional InputsOptional Inputs

  • Mass units
Use this option to specify the unit of measurement. Select from the following:

gm - Grams
kg - Kilograms
oz - Ounces
lb - Pounds

  • Density
Use this option to specify the material density used. This option overrides the density set with Material Attributes Form. The units of the density are in the current model units unless otherwise set with the Mass Units option. Enter the material density as kg/mm^3.  If you have a part in Inch units and you specify lb (pounds) for mass units, the density will be interpreted as lb/in³.  If you leave the default value of 0, the density will be determined by the Material Attributes you previously applied to the shape.

  • Variable
Use this option to log variables to the active part’s history whose values equal each mass properties parameter. The variable can then be used in any expression, equation or VX macro.

Three variables are created by default.  Part_Area, Part_Volume and Part_Mass.  See the Tools pulldown > Variable Browser.

Part_Mass is also displayed on the VX drawing sheet Templates under the title block.

  • Create point at centroid
Check this option to have VX create a point entity at the Center of Gravity of the shape, component or assembly.
